Meet your Guidance Department
The goal of the Guidance Department at Thornhill Secondary School is to provide students with the tools they need to be successful in school, in their daily lives and in preparation for their post-secondary pathway. We offer a variety of services, programs and events to assist our students.
Book an Appointment
Parent/Guardian appointments should be booked directly with Ms Yoshizu, the Guidance Secretary by phone or in person.
Students:
- Log into your Teachassist.ca account using your GAPPS account information.
- Scroll Down on TeachAssist Homepage to book appt. with your guidance counsellor by Alpha last name.
- Choose the Date you would like to book your appointment on the calendar. Then “Click” on the Time you would like to book.
- Show the TeachAssist notice to your classroom teacher, then come to Guidance for your appt.
- Your guidance counsellor will give you a paper slip, with the Time your appt finished. Return to class and give the slip to your classroom teacher.
What We Do
Our guidance department serves the school community in a variety of ways:
- Supports students in academic planning and course selection.
- Helps students to seek out special pathways programs in secondary school that support their learning styles, interests and needs.
- Helps individual students to envision a plan for post-secondary and target some short and long term goals.
- Provides information around all post-secondary pathways (workplace, college, apprenticeship, university) and career pathways.
- Supports students in establishing effective study habits and exam preparation.
- Coaches in the scholarship application process.
- Supports students in such life skills as decision-making, problem-solving, conflict-resolution, stress and time management and relationship awareness.
- Provides personal counselling and referrals to community resources.
- Provides crisis counselling and referrals to community resources.
